Levels in milk
Maternal Levels. Six mothers were given 3 doses of injectable inactivated whole cholera vaccine (Swedish National Bacteriological Laboratory) at 3-week intervals. They also received 3 doses of oral typhoid vaccine (Vivotif Berne, Berne, Swiss Serum and Vaccine Institute. Berne, Switzerland) on days 1, 3, and 5. Milk IgA antibody titers peaked in the first milk sample at 2 weeks after the first dose in 3 women and there was virtually no response in the other three. IgA antibodies were polymeric and short-lived (4 to 6 weeks).[ 3 ] Thirty lactating Pakistani women were vaccinated with 3 doses of oral typhoid vaccine (Vivotif Berne, Berne, Swiss Serum and Vaccine Institute. Berne, Switzerland) on days 1, 3, and 5 alone or in combination with injectable cholera vaccine. All mothers had high preimmunization antibody titers of IgG, IgM and IgA against the S. typhi 21 a in serum, as well as slgA antibodies in both saliva and breast milk. After vaccination, 5 mothers responded with an increase in their milk sIgA levels and 7 showed a decrease after the vaccination. The lack of or negative response to vaccination was thought to be due to prior gut exposure to typhoid.[ 4 ] Infant Levels. Relevant published information was not found as of the revision date.
