Is swelling (edema) of feet/ankles normal during pregnancy?
First, let's rule out the things that need care today
Read this short list. If any of it matches what you're experiencing, call your maternity team now — they would much rather hear from you and find nothing wrong.
SUDDEN or severe swelling of face/hands, or swelling with headache/vision changes (possible PREECLAMPSIA - seek care urgently); swelling in ONE painful calf (possible clot/DVT - urgent).
If none of these apply, this is very often normal. Here's what's usually going on.
Most common in the 2nd & 3rd trimester. See what else is expected at your stage.
What's usually normal
Mild gradual swelling of feet/ankles, worse by day's end, better after rest.
Why it happens
Extra fluid and pressure on veins from the growing uterus.
What can help
Elevate feet, avoid long standing, stay hydrated, left-side rest, comfortable shoes.
